August 3 Jim Messina...His Music from Loggins & Messina, Poco, Buffalo Springfield Where: W.O.W Hall When: 8:00 PM Tuesday
Few musical artists résumés list membership in a band inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame; fewer still can lay claim to being a founding member of the seminal band credited with creating Country Rock; and only one artist can include all the above in addition to being one half of the most successful duo of the 1970s. When chronicling the current commercial and critical success of artists like Keith Urban, Brooks & Dunn, and the pairing of Alison Krauss & Robert Plant for 2009's Album Of The Year Raising Sand, it is not overstating things to say a direct line can be drawn back to Jim Messina's legacy with Buffalo Springfield, Poco and Loggins & Messina.
A supremely talented guitarist, Jim Messina began working with the Buffalo Springfield in 1966 as a recording engineer on their second album Buffalo Springfield Again. In 1967, at the request of the group and Atlantic Records founder and president Ahmet Ertegun, Messina was asked to produce the band's third and final album Last Time Around. Shortly thereafter, he replaced bass player Bruce Palmer -- touring and recording with the band up until completion and release of their swan song album.
Leading the way as producer, arranger, vocalist and guitarist, and contributing songs such as "Listen To A Country Song" (subsequently recorded by country singer, Lynn Anderson, it was released as a single in 1972 and climbed to #3 on the charts), "Nobody But You", "Same Old Wine" and "Peace Of Mind", the album Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin' In was released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was born.
Now, nearly 45 years after first stepping into the studio with Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay to engineer Buffalo Springfield Again, Jim Messina is hitting the road with guitar in hand to tell the stories and sing the songs that made Buffalo Springfield, Poco and Loggins & Messina iconic American groups.
"Five Easy Pieces" Director: Bob Rafelson (1970) With Jack Nicholson and Karen Black. (98 min.)
Jack Nicholson plays a concert pianist who has dropped out of the music world to work in the oil fields. When his father falls ill, he brings his waitress girlfriend to Spokane to visit his upper class family.
Several sequences were filmed in Oregon, and the most famous, the "chicken sandwich" scene was filmed in Eugene at the Denny's near the 30th Street I-5 onramp.
This summer we will be exploring lesser-known films from the 1970s by directors, such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, and Hal Ashby.
This is an LCC class at DIVA that explores the work of the world's award winning directors. If you love great films, and love learning about them, this class is for you. The class will look at the trends and highlights in the history of film while relaxing in a casual screening room environment. Participants are invited to make themselves comfortable, chairs are provided, but some will prefer to bring pillows and sit on the floor. Students are welcome to bring snacks.

Pat Benatar is a certified rock'n'roll superstar, a four-time Grammy winner with six platinum and four gold albums to her credit as well as such hit singles as "I Need A Lover," "Heartbreaker," "Fire and Ice," "Treat Me Right," "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," "Hell Is For Children," "Shadows of the Night," and "Love Is A Battlefield." Long acknowledged as one of the leading female rock vocalists in the industry, Benatar will be embarking on her first live concert dates in over two years before going into the studio to record her first album since '93's Gravity's Rainbow.
After capturing industry ears with her showcases at New York's Catch A Rising Star, Benatar signed to Chrysalis Records and released the million selling "In The Heat of the Night" in 1979, followed by the multi-platinum "Crimes of Passion" a year later. From 1980-83, she captured an unprecedented four straight Grammysin the category "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Female" for the Top Five album "Crimes of Passion" ('80) and the hit singles "Fire and Ice" ('81), "Shadows of the Night" ('82) and "Love Is A Battlefield" ('83). With the latter, she emerged as one of the leading stars of the emerging music video scene with a Bob Giraidi-directed clip which proved to be an MTV mainstay.
She followed with the most successful album of her career in "Precious Time" ('81), which topped the U.S. charts. Platinum records "Get Nervous" ('82), "Live From Earth" ('83) and "Tropico" ('84)-came next, succeeded by gold records "Seven The Hard Way" ('84) -- which featured "Invincible," the theme from the hit movie Legend of Billie Jean, starringHelen Slater -- "Wide Awake In Dreamland" ('88), "Best Shots" ('89) and "True Love" ('91), her critically-acclaimed blues album which had her covering B.B. King's "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss." The record was a labor of love for Benatar and husband/producer/long-time collaborator Neil Giraldo and proved the rock vocalist was equally adept at belting out the blues. In addition, Pat has been an active participant in numerous charity and fund-raising events, including Artists United Against Apartheid in 1985, and recorded a version of "Please Come Home For Christmas" in 1990 especially for the Desert Storm coalition troops who served in the Mideast during the Gulf War.
Benatar and Giraldo have been a working couple since Neil penned the song, 'We Live For Love" from her debut album "In The Heat of the Night", and has continued to wear many different hats, including producer, guitarist, and songwriter as well as soulmate. "Musically, we're still in touch with each other. We like to play together," says Pat. "It's who's cooking dinner tonight that's the problem." This summer will be Resin Music's 5th Annual Surf Roots Tour -- the #1 destination for summertime good vibes! The tour kicks off July 21 at the Roxy in Los Angeles and hits over 20 cities bringing together reggae, rock and surf music with environmental consciousness.
The artists are Anuhea from Maui, Hawaii, The Green from Oahu, HI. Stranger from San Diego, CA, and Tamarama from Tamarama Beach, Australia!
Anuhea enjoyed the spotlight. She was the head anchor for the daily campus-wide news, hosted a variety of TV shows for local television stations, and acted in school musicals. Receiving numerous scholarships for her achievements in film production, she attended film school in Orange County, CA, but realized she wasn't heading in the direction she was most passionate about, music. So she traded her formal education for a real-life one. Returning to the islands, she began performing at local coffee shops and restaurants.
Anuhea eventually put a band together and, until this point, has acted as her own manager, booking agent, music producer and distributor. Anuhea took recordings from a live taping for a public radio station and turned them into her first real demo CD Rough Cuts. With a delicate blend of fragility, strength and sass, Anuhea blends engaging lyrics with acoustic soul, pop and reggae into a style that has earned her a reputation as Hawaii's newest rising star. Her signature guitar flow, sultry vocals and honest song writing make her a female version of multimillion selling Hawaii-based artist Jack Johnson.
The Green is Caleb Keolanui, JP Kennedy, Ikaika Antone and Zion Thompson. They all fell in love with music at a very young age listening to legendary artists like Bob Marley, Aswad, UB40, Steel Pulse, Midnite and so many others.
Caleb and JP were cofounders of the group Next Generation. Ikaika (The Next Generations's keyboard player) had previously worked with lead guitarist and vocalist Zion Thompson. Despite The Next Generations success, a follow up album was never recorded. So Caleb, JP, Ikaika and Zion got together and formed The Green.
Based out of the South Bay of San Diego, the members of Stranger draw inspiration from their diverse surroundings. It is multicultural and musical diversity that grants Stranger a soulful blend of reggae roots, rock and jazz infused with conscious lyrics.
In 2002 Stranger began their first official recording experience with the recording techniques professor from Southwestern College. This turned out to be a three year process; the album was suitably titled Life Lessons. Directly after, Stranger wrote a whole new set of music and immediately began recording their second album. During the Shelter From The Storm recording sessions, Stranger added trombone and sax to the group.
In the mid-Nineties, Franti first formed Spearhead, and increasingly in recent years, he's found his own voice musically and his own organic brand of popular success. Franti and Spearhead's last album, 2008's All Rebel Rockers -- recorded in Jamaica with legendary producers and players Sly & Robbie - became the biggest hit of Franti's career, hitting the Top 40 on the Billboard 200, and yielded his biggest hit, the Top 20 "Say Hey (I Love You)."
"I had a nice, long time to get ready for that first hit, and so I really appreciated it when it happened," says Franti. "So when we were just mastering the new album, I was saying to my manager, "Boy, wouldn't it be fun to have a sophomore hit?" He was like, "Sophomore hit? You've already been through grad school, man" So yes, I've paid some dues, and that's made getting this far -- and still being here -- mean even more to me. The funny thing is that `Say Hey' went into the Top Twenty right as I was being wheeled into surgery. I got the text, and I thought, `Wow, I've finally got a hit record, and I'm not even going to live to enjoy it.' That put everything in perspective too."
Michael Franti is not a man to openly chase success - in fact; he's not a man who even wears shoes(for the last ten years). Still, Franti has absolutely no problem hearing his music on the radio now. "When I was a kid, I used to listen to AM radio on family vacations in the car, and at family barbeques and my dad would leave the radio on. So songs that were the silly pop hits became a really meaningful part of my childhood - and of my adult life now. So when I think of the fact that there's some family out there on the beach in the summer together listening to `Say Hey,' it makes me feel really good. The truth is a good pop song that makes you feel good can be something of value and meaning to people."
It's an exciting time for Lilla D'Mone. With the recent release of her self-produced debut - Music Trance - D'Mone's soulful-sweet journey has officially commenced.
"a languid, sultry and sensual soul and R&B mix that is instantly accessible, yet shows a remarkable depth and musical maturity."
- The Oregonian
Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Lilla grew up under the influence of her parents' music: At the age of 6 she taught herself to play the piano by ear and, by age 12, was a shining light in her local gospel choir. In high school other opportunities presented themselves--in addition to gospel choir, she sang and toured the East Coast with Ulysses S. Grant High Schools internationally recognized Royal Blues, Jazz Band, at the same time providing stage and studio vocals for several local hip-hop and R&B acts. It was during this time that she found a niche in the local Portland scene. After performing guest vocals for a number of published releases, and studio work with national hip-hop, R&B and jazz notables, she felt she had enough experience to strike out on her own.
