Tech N9ne
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 7:00 PM Sunday

With special guests E-40; Tragedy; and Glasses Malone opening.

Strange Music's latest release brings together two things synonymous with Kansas City: Tech N9ne and Gates BBQ on "Tech N9ne Collabos - The Gates Mixed Plate". After the release of K.O.D., Tech N9ne made it clear that he was done with the darkness and ready to party in the light - a mission that definitely comes thru loud and clear on "The Gates Mixed Plate". The first single from the album, "O.G.", is a boisterous homage to Gates BBQ and Kansas City that's sure to leave you hungering for more cuts from "The Gates Mixed Plate"! With a list of features that reads like a rap menu - including Devin The Dude, Jay Rock, Glasses Malone, Yukmouth and Stevie Stone, as well as Strange Music labelmates Krizz Kaliko, Kutt Calhoun and Big Scoob.

Aaron Dontez Yates, better known by his stage name Tech N9ne, is an American rapper. With a career spanning over 25 years, Tech N9ne is widely regarded as one of the most successful independent artists in contemporary rap and hip-hop music.

In September 2008, Tech N9ne officially hit a milestone in his career, recording over a million album sales to date, thanks to the release of his double album, Killer. Despite the accomplishment, the rapper remembers the struggles of his career, up until this point. However, he wasn't surprised. "It just reminded me of all the work we done in the past, up until now. It's something. It's dope," the rapper told BallerStatus.com. "I don't think it's sunken in yet. I've been celebrating for the last two days because that's a hell of an accomplishment. I've been planning success all my life. I'm not even a bit surprised, I'm happy about it. That just means I was right."

Umphrey's McGee
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 8:00 PM Thursday

A mantis is an insect with an exceptional range of vision.

"Mantis" is the Greek word for prophet.

And Mantis is the epic new album by Midwestern monsters of improvised rock, Umphrey's McGee. Consisting of Brendan Bayliss (guitar, vocals), Jake Cinninger (guitar, synthesizers, vocals), Joel Cummins (keyboards, vocals), Andy Farag (percussion), Kris Myers (drums, vocals), and Ryan Stasik (bass), Umphrey's McGee enters its second decade together with their most progressive, melodic and artistically cohesive album to date.

And that date is Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009, when Mantis casts another Windy City family into the limelight.

A long-time-coming labor of love as well as an inspiring affirmation of musical brotherhood, Mantis is Umphrey's first fully fleshed-out studio statement since 2006's Safety in Numbers, which was followed by 2007's odds-and-sods collection The Bottom Half and the double live album Live at Murat. So when Brendan Bayliss sings, "We believe there's something here worth dying for," to kick off Mantis's majestic twelve-minute title track, you should take him at his word.

Mantis is the first Umphrey's album to consist entirely of material never previously performed on the road, where the band rules the improv-rock circuit and plays more than 100 shows each year. Although the band already plays numerous songs they have yet to record, sometimes you just have to hold back in order to deliver a bigger bang. Mystique, thy name is Mantis.

Founded in 1997 in the shadows of the Golden Dome of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, Umphrey's McGee soon made Chicago home base, and set their sights on becoming one of the premier live acts in today's touring circuit. Over the course of the last ten years, the band has performed at festivals such as Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, and continues to sell out shows in the nation's premier venues coast to coast. They have toured Europe multiple times and performed at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival in 2006. As their sound evolves with every passing show, the live concerts sold on their expansive music archive site UMLive.net continue to be in high demand by their hungry fan base. The second decade of Umphrey's McGee is fueled with Mantis in the tank, and the band shows no signs of letting up.

O.A.R.
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 8:00 PM Friday

Sometimes the road already traveled can provide vistas never before seen. One would think after more than a decade of crossing this country's highways, the last thing O.A.R. co-founder and lyricist Marc Roberge would want is more time on the blacktop.

But as he prepared to record the band's sixth studio CD, "All Sides," Roberge, his wife, and their dogs drove cross country.

"I decided it would be interesting to make the drive from New York to L.A. to start my journey into this album," Roberge says. "I knew once I got there, time would be spent focused completely on music, so I wanted to gather some experience first. It was a completely different view of America than from a tour bus. You see so much more when you are in the driver's seat."

Of course, some would say Roberge and his O.A.R. band mates have been in the driver's seat since he, guitarist Richard On and drummer Chris Culos formed their first group in 8th grade in Maryland in the early '90s, bonding over their love of Pearl Jam.

Three years later, in 11th grade, bassist Benj Gershman came on board and O.A.R. - of a revolution - was born. Saxophonist Jerry DePizzo, after meeting Roberge and Culos at Ohio State University, joined the band full time in 2000. Eleven years after the group's first release, O.A.R. has come to stand for authentic rock music that reflects the collective triumphs and tragedies we all experience in this world: Real people making real music that resounds deeply with their fans.

Carl Woideck: Jazz Meets Cole Porter
Where: Jaqua Concert Hall - The Shedd
When: 7:30 PM Thursday

Composer-lyricist Cole Porter (1891-1964) has long been a favorite of jazz musicians. This despite the fact that, unlike George Gershwin and Harold Arlen, Porter did not move in jazz circles. In fact, the wealthy Porter tended to socialize with the rich and famous in Paris, New York and Hollywood. Success came comparatively late to Porter; it wasn't until the late 1920s that he connected with Broadway audiences and critics. Out of his late-1920s/early-1930s shows came such classics as "What Is this Thing Called Love?", "Love for Sale", and "Night and Day". Soon, jazz artists such as Billie Holiday and Art Tatum saw the jazz potential in Porter's songs. In 1956, singer Ella Fitzgerald recorded her Cole Porter Songbook and helped frame Porter's songs as classics for all times. Carl Woideck and friends will be performing many of the Porter songs that jazz musicians most admire, including "In the Still of the Night", "Night and Day" (in a Coltrane-style arrangement) and "From this Moment On".

Gogol Bordello
Where: The McDonald Theatre
When: 8:00 PM Sunday

There are many of us for whom music is an irreplaceable part of life. We rely on it to take us out of sadness, pressures of poverty, youth, age, etc. Mixed with alcohol it seems to be a remedy for just about anything, be it a rapid fire of notes exploding in catharsis all over the major key, or an obsessive marathon of soul-searching sounds crawling around minor key... it all appears somehow more solid and present in our lives than materials, something we can always address and hold on to. At its best, music connects us to a feeling as large as the whole goddamn universe itself...

With our music, and music that we popularize, we try to reach out and remind people that, when taken out of the hands of a parasite, music is still a great lead into a democratic atmosphere of chaos, where moments of great freedom and where great friends could be found. And that in the world of rapidly dissolving authentic cultures, soul-searching through the music is something that connects you with the most authentic thing there - your savage heart.

The Weepies
Where: Jaqua Concert Hall - The Shedd
When: 7:30 PM Tuesday

Since they met in a Cambridge folk club 9 years ago, The Weepies have progressed from an indie duo playing house concerts, to ranks on the Billboard charts. Though they now have sales in the hundreds of thousands, the Weepies have kept a surprisingly low profile: they haven’t toured at all since 2006. “Our son was born right as we finished Hideaway (2008),” says Steve Tannen. “Touring was out. It was a huge change from the 180 shows of the Say I Am You release (2006).”

The band was kept in the spotlight by dozens of uses in TV shows and films, including a prominent campaign ad for Barack Obama. “It was pretty surreal to stay at home while the music went out into the world,” adds Deb Talan. “But staying at home got us back into writing that much more quickly.” Crystallizing their organic acoustic sound and pop harmonies, the California duo has come up with their deepest, most accessible record yet. Third in a trilogy for Nettwerk Records, Be My Thrill (August 31, 2010) is a showcase for the duo’s powerhouse songwriting and unique harmonies, ranging from the Cole-Porter-esque “They’re in Love” to the Dusty Springfield-like “When You Go Away.” The Weepies stop at The Shedd on tour in support of Be My Thrill, Tuesday, October 19th.

Now Hear This: Raiatea Helm
Where: Jaqua Concert Hall - The Shedd
When: 7:30 PM Thursday

“Raiatea Helm sings in the high-voiced throwback leo ki‘eki‘e style without a hint of kitsch. Her second album, Sweet and Lovely is poised and utterly elegant.” -- The New York Times

Hawaii's reigning premier female vocalist and 2-time Grammy nominee Raiatea Mokihana Maile Helm released her first album, Far Away Heaven, in 2003. That same year she won the Female Vocalist of the Year and Most Promising Artist titles at the 2003 HARA (Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists) Awards. Her 2004 second release, Sweet & Lovely, was nominated for a Grammy and took home both Female Vocalist of the Year and Favorite Entertainer of the Year honors at the HARA Awards. Her first Shedd appearance was on tour in support of her 3rd release, the Grammy nominated Hawaiian Blossom (2007). She returns to the Shedd on the heals of her 4th recording with slack key great Keola Beamer, Keola Beamer & Raiatea Helm (2010).

Raiatea sings in the traditional falsetto style of early Hawaiian singers. The style was practiced principally by male singers in the 1940s and '50s, leo ki‘eki‘e but also found powerful voice in the form of legendary Hawai'ian songbird Lena Machado (1903-74) and "Auntie" Genoa Leilani Adolpho Keawe-Aiko (1918-2008). Raiatea is recognized throughout all of Hawai'i as the heir apparent to this old school style of singing and has been instrumental in the revitalization of leo ki‘eki‘e on the Hawaiian music scene.

Nellie McKay
Where: Jaqua Concert Hall - The Shedd
When: 7:30 PM Thursday

Even with birthdays separated by 60 years and 10 days, entertainers Nellie McKay and Doris Day are cut from the same cloth. The two share a passion for animal rights, a sunny gosh-gee-swell positivity and a love for the Great American Songbook—as well as a depth, complexity and progressivism that belies the toothy grins for which both are known.

McKay's Verve Records salute to the woman born Doris Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff, Normal As Blueberry Pie – A Tribute to Doris Day, features the iconic New York singer/songwriter interpreting a colorful selection of songs from Day's extensive recordings—with the smart arrangements and crackerjack instrumentalists listeners have come to expect. “We were trying to connect with the many time periods in Doris' life,” McKay explains, “from the big bands to the post-McCarthy era.”

For Nellie, producing, arranging, and performing Normal As Blueberry Pie was the natural outcome of all the years she has spent listening enraptured to Ms. Day's music. “She was -- and still is -- ahead of her time,” says Nellie, who was awarded the Doris Day Music Award in 2005 for “The Dog Song” in recognition of her dedication to animal rights. Nellie reviewed a recent biography of Day for The New York Times, and is one of the few people in 30 years to be granted an interview with Ms. Day (The Bark magazine, 2007). “What she possessed -- beyond her beauty, physical grace and natural acting ability -- was a resplendent voice that conveyed enormous warmth and feeling,” writes Nellie. What does one make of Nellie McKay? She is, simply, brilliant, intensely independent, and truly satisfying as an entertainer. Hers was a "don't miss" night when she first appeared at The Shedd in 2007. It will be another don't miss night for this, her second appearance
