September 17 - October 30
Smokey Joe's Cafe
Where: Actors Caberet and Annex - Eugene, Oregon
When: Friday & Saturday at 8:00

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, as much as anyone, virtually invented rock 'n' roll, and now their songs provide the basis for an electrifying entertainment that illuminates a golden age of American culture. In an idealized '50's setting, the classic themes of love won, lost and imagined blend with hilarious set-pieces and slice-of-life emotions.

Featuring nearly 40 of the greatest songs ever recorded. If SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE was a newly-written musical it would be hailed as one of the greatest pieces of songwriting ever done for the Broadway stage. The fact that the show is a collection of pop songs written by Leiber and Stoller in the 1950s and '60s is no less remarkable. This material, without the aid of a book stringing dramatic action together and without ever being intended to exist as a coherent body of work on its own, provides the basis of an electrifying performance that recapitulates a golden age of American culture

Benise: The Spanish Guitar
Where: The Hult Center - Silva Hall
When: 8:00 PM Saturday

The Spanish Guitar is an epic tale that will transport the audience to such exotic places as a Parisian café, a Flamenco tapas bar in Spain, an Arabian desert, a Venetian masquerade ball, and the cobblestone streets of old Havana.

This new show will feature Benise's guitar as protagonist, as it becomes the keeper of the stories of glory and tragedy through time and worlds gone by. Brilliantly choreographed dance numbers and orchestral pieces accompany the stories from inside this magical instrument.

While taking place on an ever-changing stage, Benise's new show will feature real video footage from his travels around the globe. The cultures and experiences Benise encountered on his voyage were the inspiration for the new music, dance, and costumes featured in The Spanish Guitar.

The Emmy Award-winning cast from the PBS Special "Nights of Fire" includes dancers carefully handpicked from a global pool of some of the most brilliantly diverse talent to be found. Traditional Flamenco dancers, Broadway performers, and soloists previously featured with Madonna, Gloria Estefan, and Ricky Martin have all joined forces to make up The Gitanas, Benise's female dancers.
