Jacobs Gallery Presents a two part exhibit:
Louie Gizyn & Material ARTistry
Where: Hult Center - Jacobs Gallery
When: Tuesday-Friday, 12-4 PM | Saturday 11 AM - 3 PM

Carnival of Color ~ Fanciful Figurines:

Louie Gizyn
Louie majored in art since kindergarten and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. For the past thirty years, she has been working in clay and cloth. Whether large or small, each mime is individually designed as a one-of-kind piece. The head of each character is hand-pinched out of stoneware clay. The head is then fired, sanded, painted and varnished. The body of each figure is constructed with a skeletal armature of wood and wire, or welded steel rod. The bulk of the body is sculpted with fiberfill and cloth. The costuming then begins. Color is the breath of her work. When choosing fabrics, she tries to maintain a balance between deliberation and spontaneity. Enjoy!

Impressions ~ Material ARTistry:
A Passion for Creating
Material ARTistry is a new group, formed from five artists of a like mind but broad experience in the fiber and fine arts. A passion for creating art that makes use of fiber, textiles, thread, and other seemingly humble materials brings together the diverse visions of Sally Zehrung, Jae McDonald, MarDee Hansen, Sandra McMorris Johnson, and Janet Hiller, the members of Material ARTistry. Each is drawn to the idea of presenting ideas which appeal to two senses simultaneously--the visual and the tactile. Each works in some way with cloth, but the results are as varied as their makers.

While acknowledging the tradition of textile-based art from many cultures, Material ARTistry pushes the edge of the genre. The group is especially interested in the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the medium with which they choose to create. Fabric is soft, familiar, and accessible, an integral part of life from birth to death.

In the hands of these artists, fibers are manipulated, cut, dyed, fused, and sometimes burned. The resulting works of art, ranging from quilts, to dolls, to collage structures, challenge conventional notions of textile art. The artists are committed not only to exhibiting and promoting their own work, but their medium as well. Making connections with viewers--communicating on a sensory as well as a cognitive level--is the goal.

DIVA's "Young Visionaires" Exhibit Features A Bold New Direction For Art in Eugene
Where: DIVA Center
When: 12:00 - 5:00 PM Monday - Saturday

On Friday, February 5th, the DIVA Center will proudly present Young Visionaries, an interdisciplinary exhibition that will introduce the Eugene-Springfield area to the work of 12 extremely promising emerging artists from across the country. We are very excited about the opportunity that this show will provide for art lovers in our region to experience some of the most distinctive contemporary art being produced today.

We sincerely hope the body of work presented in Young Visionaries will serve to expand and enhance the on-going dialogue about contemporary visual arts in our community and beyond.

None of the participating artists have ever before shown at DIVA, and the vast majority will be making their Eugene debuts from the East Coast, Midwest, Portland, San Francisco, and Canada.

Some of the participating artists:
Kristin Beaver: Kristin Beaver is an artist from Illinois currently residing in Detroit. She creates wonderfully traditional oil paintings that are also, somehow, not. Her work is a contemporary re-imagining of the portraiture of Sargeant, Whistler, Henri, Glackens, et al. As a painter she is powerful, and her sometimes awkwardly posed subjects reflect that power.

Kristin received her MFA from Wayne State University, and has since shown with the likes of Bo Bartlett, Fernando Botero, John Chamberlain, Eric Fischl, David Hockney, Alex Katz, Robert Longo, Kim McCarty, and the Andy Warhol estate. Her recent solo exhibition at the David Klein Gallery was met with acclaim. She is a 2009 recipient of the Kresge Artist Fellowship.

Joshua Newth: Joshua Newth is a Canadian with an American citizenship, born in Toronto and currently residing in Michigan. He creates brilliant, delicate drawings that illustrate not only mankind’s capacity for destruction, but also the inherent possibility of its redemption. The drawings are totems executed on crumbling paper—for when eventually the substrate disintegrates, so too will its contents—a symbolic erasure of mankind’s capacity for its own undoing.

Josh received his MFA from Wayne State University, and has spent the last few years showing regionally throughout the Detroit Area. He most recently participated in It’s Not Perfect…But We Try at WORK: Detroit, a University of Michigan gallery space; and Undomesticated at Plan B Gallery in Plymouth, of which he is the co-director. He teaches drawing and painting at Wayne State University, Schoolcraft College, and Oakland University.

Mike Doughty: The Question Jar Show
(An Acoustic Evening)
Where: W.O.W Hall
When: 8:00 PM Tuesday

When Mike Doughty released his second official solo album, 2008's Golden Delicious, the reaction from fans was intense.

"Some hated it, some loved it better than Soul Coughing," Doughty says. "I tend to take sharp left turns. Every time I put out a record, the audience seems to like what I did two years ago better. You'd think I could shrug it off because that's what always happens, but it always gets to me."

Doughty admits that his upcoming album, Sad Man Happy Man - released October 6th on ATO Records - is a reaction to his fans' reaction and that he's giving the people what they want.

Musically, Sad Man Happy Man finds Doughty returning to his acoustic roots thanks to its stripped-down arrangements that feature Doughty backing himself on guitar. He also did all the drum programming, as well as played keyboards and what he calls the "weird noise stuff," while his longtime touring partner Andrew "Scrap" Livingston handles bass duties. Recorded at New York's Kampo Studios, the album was co-produced by Doughty and engineer Pat Dillett (They Might Be Giants, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay), with the exception of album's first single "Doubly Gratified," which was produced by David Kahne, who helmed Soul Coughing's 1996 album Irresistible Bliss, as well as albums by Paul McCartney, Sugar Ray and Tony Bennett.

Janus with Seasons After
Where: W.O.W Hall
When: 8:30 PM Wednesday

Janus is an ancient, two-faced Roman god of gateways and beginnings. Also the root word of January, Janus is a mythological figure that looks both forward and back and symbolizes change and transformation."

To their fans' dismay, in mid-2008 the band Janus disappeared from their hometown rock scene in Chicago as they secretly slaved away on a new project. This project was to be uncompromising in every aspect; from producing and engineering, to songwriting and branding -- the band was going to do it on their own and better than anyone else in the business."

One year later their Realid Records debut, Red Light Return, was born. Janus' debut harkens back to the days when albums were written as a total piece of work, rather than a group of single songs. The Chicago natives recorded, produced and created all the themes, digital presence and artwork on their own."

Lead singer David Scotney says, "The record, as a whole, was designed to play well from start to finish, showing a range of what we're about as a band. We definitely didn't start out building a record around a few good songs -- the approach was to write as many great songs as we could, making sure none of them sounded alike and that none of them sounded like any other band."

The title Red Right Return stems from an old nautical saying, "Red Right Returning". This phrase helped sailors remember that when returning home to port to always keep the red buoy on the right hand side of the ship to insure safe passage.

Joining them will be Metropolitan Opera baritone Aaron St. Clair Nicholson as Valentin and Seattle Opera's Elizabeth Pojanowski as Siebel. 2010 da Vinci Film Festival
Where: Darkside Cinema - Corvallis, Oregon
When: Friday | Saturday | Sunday

Independent Fils for Independent Minds!

Launched in 1999, the da Vinci Film Festival began as part of the summer celebration of art, science, and technology, da Vinci Days. The original, a screening of animated films during the summer festival, has evolved into an established and well-attended annual celebration of independent film. Still a program of da Vinci Days, da Vinci Film Festival is now held in the spring, bringing audiences a variety of independent films from around the world, in several genres.

We feature films from the Fast Film Project (link to Fast Film Project info page), a 48 hour flurry of filmmaking the month prior to the Film Festival. Individuals or film teams register for the FFP and have 48 hours to write, shoot, edit, and submit a short film, incorporating a line of dialogue received at registration.

This year we will host 10+ visiting filmmakers from local young filmmakers to those from around the country. When available, filmmakers will be introduced after their film is shown for a brief Q&A. A Filmmakers Forum will take place Saturday, March 13. Attendees will learn more about what inspired the filmmakers and what is involved in making indpendent film.

Cats
Where: The Hult - Silva Hall
When: Friday | Saturday | Sunday

CATS moves to the Hult Center for three additional performances due to unprecedented popular demand! Tickets are available at the Hult Center!

Based on the universally popular poetry of T.S. Eliot, CATS tells the story, in song and dance, of the annual gathering of Jellicle cats at which time one special cat is selected to ascend to the Heaviside layer. A true musical theatre phenomenon, CATS opened at London's New London Theatre on May 11, 1981 and ran for a record-setting 21 years. CATS's London success was nearly matched on Broadway where it ran at the Wintergarden Theatre for just over 18 years.

"A triumphant piece of musical theater" Derek Jewell, Sunday Times "It's a musical that transports the audience into a complete fantasy world that could only exist in the theater and yet rarely does. CATS believes in purely theatrical magic, and on that faith it unquestionably delivers." Frank Rich, The New York Times, 1982 "More than a hit... a genuine theatrical landmark. The show keeps rejuvenating itself." Elyse Sommer, CurtainUp.

In July of 2008, Ms. Ruth released her debut album “Underwater and Other Places”.
