At the Jacobs Gallery:
The Shall we dance series of photographs, some of which will be featured in this exhibit, are the only signed prints, and almost all are featured in Brian Lanker’s book, Shall we dance:
Tango, waltz, square dance, hip-hop, ballet, chorus line…
Dance has come to America from every corner of the world in a seemingly endless stream of movement. Almost every known culture has a dance tradition, and as the United States is the crossroads of the world, every form of international dance can be found here.
Photographer Brian Lanker traveled for a year documenting the numerous manifestations of dance in this country. Whether high art or the ubiquitous high school dance, his photographs and accompanying interviews show how central dance is to the American character. In Shall We Dance?, Lanker celebrates some of the most astonishing accomplishments of the human body and captures how dance expresses the gamut of human emotion from sorrow to joy.
